The area is often described as a “sleeping city”: every morning, large numbers of residents leave for work across Guangzhou; at night, they return along similar routes to rest before the cycle begins again. Located at the urban periphery, it functions as a vast space for accommodating bodies exhausted by labour and commuting. - [This Is a Long Story / 这是一个很长的故事](https://yanjiacheng.com/This-is-a-Long-Story/): The Long Image Series is an ongoing observation of everyday collective scenes in China’s urban public spaces. Photographed in subways, railway stations, parks, shopping malls, and city streets, the works depict delivery workers waiting for orders or commuting home, crowds moving through railway stations during the Spring Festival travel season, residents gathering around public dance performances, ordinary people taking selfies, and strangers who briefly assemble before dispersing again. - [Experiences of the Countryside / 乡村经验](https://yanjiacheng.com/Hometown/): Experiences of the Countryside is one of the recurring themes in my practice. Here, “the countryside” does not refer to a single hometown or geographic location. It describes a wider field of experience shaped by land, family, migration, labour, and demographic policy. The works were developed in different situations—from returning home during the Spring Festival and volunteering in a rural community to observing the living spaces of Chinese migrant workers in Singapore. I begin with these specific places to consider how people leave, return, move across borders, and rebuild relationships with land and family within changing social structures. - [Experiences of the City / 城市经验](https://yanjiacheng.com/Experiences-of-the-City/): Experiences of the City is an ongoing observation of everyday urban spaces, public infrastructure, and the traces left by ordinary life. The works move between street bollards, illuminated advertising boxes, abandoned factories, online nicknames, and handwritten messages left by workers. Although these subjects appear unrelated, they collectively record how people understand, use, and leave their presence within the city. - [Spring Festival Travel Rush / 春运](https://yanjiacheng.com/Spring-Festival-Travel-Rush/): From 2020 to 2024, I photographed the Spring Festival travel rush at Guangzhou Railway Station over five consecutive years. Each year, I returned before the Chinese New Year and selected one specific subject from this vast and complex site of migration. - [Image Reproduction / 图像再生产](https://yanjiacheng.com/Image-Reproduction/): Image Reproduction is a body of work developed from online images, digital platforms, and publicly accessible visual records. I collect material from Google Street View, social media, traffic-management platforms, news screenshots, and online group photographs, then reorganise it through cropping, stitching, classification, layering, reconstruction, and sequencing. Images originally produced for navigation, communication, administration, or personal documentation are placed within new visual and conceptual structures. ## Languages - 简体中文: https://yanjiacheng.com/zh-CN/ - English: https://yanjiacheng.com/ ## Site resources - [Biography, CV and contact](https://yanjiacheng.com/About-Contact/) - [XML sitemap](https://yanjiacheng.com/sitemap.xml) All project descriptions, images and biographical information on this domain are published by Yan Jiacheng.
