Night in the Suburbs

Night on the Urban Fringe was photographed in a large residential district on the outskirts of Guangzhou. The area is densely occupied by apartment buildings, with very few public spaces in which residents can gather or remain. Near the housing complex runs a river, with a village still standing on the opposite bank. During the day, it appears as an ordinary waterway at the boundary between urban and rural space. At night, it gradually becomes a shared setting for everyday life.

As commuters return from work and the streetlights come on, people begin to gather along the river. Some walk or exercise their dogs, children run across the open ground, vendors set up temporary stalls, while others simply sit and rest. Most remain only briefly, arriving at different times, crossing paths, and eventually leaving.

The area has few formal park facilities and no clearly prescribed way of being used. Residents adapt the riverbank, roadside, and vacant ground according to their immediate needs, temporarily transforming them into places for walking, playing, trading, and resting. Through these shifting forms of occupation, an undefined peripheral space acquires a temporary public character.

While photographing the area, I often thought of it as a stage assembled each evening. Artificial light creates small zones of visibility, into which figures enter before disappearing again. Their brief presences accumulate, giving the place a night of its own. The work observes how everyday life is constructed within an underplanned environment and how public space is repeatedly produced through ordinary acts of occupation.
