People Sitting Around Watching Dancers in the Park

In a park in Guangzhou, people of different ages, occupations, and social backgrounds sit together around an open space, watching a group of dancers. This temporary gathering softens the social boundaries that ordinarily structure urban life, allowing the park to function as a relatively open and egalitarian public space.

I photographed the spectators by moving in a circle around them, then unfolded the continuous viewpoints into a single elongated image. The enclosed spatial arrangement is flattened into a linear sequence, in which gestures, expressions, and lines of sight gradually appear across the frame. Although the dancers remain outside the image, the spectators themselves become the subjects of observation. The work explores the shifting relationship between watching, participating, and being watched in public space.
