Taobao Review Photos as a Form of Typological Photography

Taobao Review Photos as a Form of Typological Photography is based on user-uploaded review images found in the comment sections of Taobao product pages. From a large number of these photographs, I look for similar images repeatedly made around the same kind of object—such as dust covers, plastic storage items, and other everyday household products. Although they are taken by different people in different places, the fact that they all depict the same commodity often results in striking similarities in framing, distance, angle, and display.

These review photos are not produced as artistic images. Their primary purpose is to demonstrate, verify, and share experience: to show what an object looks like, whether it matches its promotional images, and how it appears in actual use. Precisely for this reason, the photographers tend to adopt the most direct and functional mode of representation, gradually producing a visual convention shaped by the platform itself.

I extract and reorganise these images, no longer treating them as isolated pieces of consumer feedback, but as a set of images defined by repetition and variation. When many similar photographs are placed together, the dispersed acts of amateur image-making begin to resemble typological photography: the same object appears again and again across different households, backgrounds, and traces of use, at once standardised and subtly differentiated.

The work examines how e-commerce platforms shape the ways ordinary people see and photograph the world, and how consumer imagery inadvertently generates a collective visual language. Review photos are part of the act of shopping, but they also form an image archive of contemporary everyday life. By reorganising them, the work reveals how platforms, commodities, and individuals jointly produce a visual world that is repetitive, flat, and yet full of small details.
